Glossary - W
WAIS (Wide Area Information
Server)/WAIS Client
A WAIS client program lets you
search all the information contained in a WAIS database (the server). Every word
in every document is indexed, so you are not only searching the titles (as with a
gopher search) but the actual text within the documents.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
A network is created when two
or more computers are connected to each other so that they can communicate. These
computers can be in the same building, or they can be in different parts of the world.
If the computers are in close proximity, the network is referred to as a LAN, or
Local Area Network. A LAN usually consists of a group of computers in the same department,
workgroup, or company. If the computers are spread across a much larger area, the
network is referred to as a WAN, or Wide Area Network. A WAN usually consists of
computers in different cities, countries, or continents.

An application used to access
the world wide web.
Web Page
An individual page on the web.
Each web page has its own URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Also see Home Page.
World Wide Web/Web/WWW/W3
A hypertext-based system that allows you to browse through information on the
Internet. Documents found on the web use hypertext links to create electronic pointers
to other documents.
