Glossary - S
Shareware
Software available for free--or
almost free--downloading. Some shareware requests that a small fee (usually between
$5.00 and $25.00) be sent to the programmer. Some shareware is free, but the programmer
retains all rights to it, so you cannot alter it in any way. (Also see freeware.)
SLIP
Serial Line Internet Protocol.
One type of protocol that can be used to connect to the Internet through a dial-up
phone line. Another such type of protocol is PPP.
Smiley
The clever juxtaposition of punctuation
marks and other keyboard characters to permit e-moting through e-mail, newsgroup
postings, and chats. There are hundreds of smileys. A basic smiley is shown below
(put your left ear on your left shoulder to view the smiling face):
:-)
Snail Mail
A not-so-nice term for land mail.
Software
Also called programs or applications,
software is the programmed code that tells your computer which personality to assume.
For example: word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, desktop publishing, etc.
You canít physically abuse software, because it is hidden, but you can verbally abuse
it when you get frustrated. This would include the word processing program that wonít
line up your table properly, the spreadsheet program that ate your pie chart, or
the presentation program that showed your slides out of order. (Also see Hardware.)
Sound Clip/Sound Bite
A sound clip is a small segment
of sound designated as a hypertext link. By clicking on the link, you can hear the
sound (which could be music, or a speaking voice, or some other noise).
Spam
Using a computer program to methodically
insert messages (usually advertisements) into hundreds or even thousands of e-mail
boxes. The equivalent of snail junk mail, but even worse because it clogs the Internet
and steals time (which is money) from unsuspecting users.
Star
Another term for an asterisk (as
in *.* or "star.dot.star"). (Also see Splat.)
Subscribe
If you want to read a newsgroup
on a regular basis, you can subscribe to it--just as you would subscribe to a magazine.
A newsreader program will keep track of the groups you subscribe to.
Surfing The Net
A cool (phat, hip, rad, etc.)
term to describe the countless hours you will inevitably spend exploring the vast
resources of the Internet.
