Netiquette
A loose set of etiquette rules
for using the Internet. These rules are not necessarily enforced, but if you want
to be a good citizen of the net, you should follow them. Variations of these rules
appear in many forms throughout the Internet.
Netscape
A world wide web browser application.
Network
Two or more computers connected
to each other so that they can communicate. These computers can be in the same building,
or they can be in different parts of the world.
If the computers are in close
proximity, the network is referred to as a LAN, or Local Area Network. A LAN usually
consists of a group of computers in the same department, workgroup, or company. If
the computers are spread across a much larger area, the network is referred to as
a WAN, or Wide Area Network. A WAN usually consists of computers in different cities,
countries, or continents.
Newbie
A nickname for a user who is new
to the Internet. This is usually meant in a slightly derogatory manner.
Newsgroups/Usenet News
A newsgroup is a special interest
group on the Internet that discusses a narrowly defined topic. The "discussion"
takes place via an open electronic bulletin board where those who are interested
can read and/or leave messages.
Newsreader Program
A software program that enables
you to read and post to newsgroups.
Nickname/Nick
A temporary name you choose while
taking part in an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) discussion.
