Mailing Lists
An Internet mailing list is a
collection of e-mail addresses. There are thousands of mailing lists, each on a unique
topic (often referred to as a discussion group). People who want to be a part of
a particular discussion group can subscribe to that groupís mailing list. Mailing
list discussion groups are similar to newsgroups, except that the messages are received
in your e-mail box, instead of on a public bulletin board.
Megabyte
1024 kilobytes, or roughly one
million bytes. (Also see Bytes and Bits.)
MIME
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension.
This is a standard used for encoding multiple data types (such as text, movies, sound,
etc.) in a mail message.
Modem
A modem is the hardware that makes
it possible for your computer to communicate with the Internet. (Also see Internal
Modem and External Modem.)
Mosaic
An old world wide web browser
application.
MOTD (Message of the Day)
A host computer may show a greeting
screen containing the MOTD, which may include a welcome message, and/or instructions.
