Glossary - L
LAN (Local Area Network)
A network is created when two
or more computers are connected to each other so that they can communicate. These
computers can be in the same building, or they can be in different parts of the world.
If the computers are in close proximity, the network is referred to as a LAN, or
Local Area Network. A LAN usually consists of a group of computers in the same department,
workgroup, or company. If the computers are spread across a much larger area, the
network is referred to as a WAN, or Wide Area Network. A WAN usually consists of
computers in different cities, countries, or continents.
Link
Link refers to a hypertext link
(or reference) found on a world wide web page. Clicking on a link will bring you
to a different page, or another part of the current page. Depending on the web browser,
a link can appear as underlined or colored text, or a link can be a picture or button.
Listserv
An automated mailing list. (Also
see Mailing List.)
Lurk/Lurking
To "hang out" in a newsgroup
or a chat channel, without participating. This sounds nasty, but it is actually a
suggested practice for newbies. Lurking gives you time to understand the flavor of
the group before becoming active in it.
