Glossary - I
Infobahn
Another goofy name for the Information
Superhighway.
Information Superhighway
A world-wide information system
that includes the Internet, as well as interactive media and video-on-demand, among
other things. The Internet is not the Information Superhighway, it is only a portion
of it.
Internal Modem
A modem that is located inside
of the CPU (as opposed to an external modem, which would be located outside of the
CPU).
Internet Access Provider
A company that provides Internet
access.
IP Address
The 32-bit number that identifies
a location on the Internet. This domain name system number is usually broken into
four groups. For example 999.888.6.777.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
IRC is a multi-user, multi-channel
chatting network that allows people worldwide to chat with one another in real time
via the Internet. The "chatting" is done via a keyboard. The "real
time" portion of IRC means that the conversation takes place in the moment.
In other words, as you type a message, somebody reads it on their screen half the
world away (or just down the street), and responds to you immediately.
IRC Client
A program on your desktop computer
or local server that facilitates Internet Relay Chats.
