Glossary - H
Hardware
The parts of a computer system
that you can physically abuse (kick, smack, etc.) when you get frustrated. :-) This
would include the CPU, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This would not include software.

Helper Application
A small program that assists your
web browser in performing duties that the web browser itself may not be able to perform.
For example a helper sound application permits you to hear hypertext links that are
sound bites.
Home Page
Your home page acts as an electronic
foyer, welcoming visitors, and pointing them to the resources available at that site.
Keep in mind that not every web page should be called a home page; only those pages
acting as a welcome mat are home pages.
Host Computer/ Host
A computer on the Internet that
allows visitors.
Hotlist
A hotlist is a collection of favorite
web page URLs (addresses). Also see Bookmarks.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
The computer language used to
code and format documents for the world wide web.
HTTP (Hypertext Transport Protocol)
This is the protocol that enables
the quick transfer of multimedia data types across the Internet. Because of this
protocol, you can view documents that include formatted text, pictures, audio tracks,
and even movies, on the world wide web.
Hypertext
A world wide web browser displays
multimedia documents created in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Hypertext documents
contain links that can help locate and move to another web page or Internet service
site.
Hypertext Link
A bit of specially formatted text
on a web page that moves you to another location when you click on it. This other
location could be a different spot on that page, a different page on that server,
or a different page on a server anywhere in the world. Hypertext links can also be
found in image maps, where you can click on part of a picture to move to another
location.
Hytelnet
A database of telnet sites that
can point you to libraries, campus-wide information systems, gopher sites, web sites,
etc.
