FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions)
A list of Frequently Asked Questions
(and the answers, of course!) designed to help those who are new to a particular
subject. Most newsgroups and mailing lists, for example, have FAQs. It is good netiquette
to read the FAQ before joining any group or list.
Flame
Abusive message sent via e-mail,
a newsgroup posting, or during an IRC chat.
FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain
Name)
The proper terminology for a siteís
domain name is the FQDN.
Freeware
Software made available for free
downloading. Once you have downloaded freeware, you can do anything you want with
it--the programmer retains no rights to it. (Also see Shareware.)
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
This protocol permits you to connect
to a remote computer, perform limited directory-related operations at that site,
and to transfer files between that site and your desktop computer or local host.
Anonymous FTP refers to the way you will log into most host computers. Most FTP sites
permit you to log in as a guest, using the username "anonymous" with no
password (other than your e-mail address) necessary.
FTP Client
A program on your desktop computer
or local server that facilitates FTP downloading.
