CCIS.net Internet Glossary - F

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

A list of Frequently Asked Questions (and the answers, of course!) designed to help those who are new to a particular subject. Most newsgroups and mailing lists, for example, have FAQs. It is good netiquette to read the FAQ before joining any group or list.

Flame

Abusive message sent via e-mail, a newsgroup posting, or during an IRC chat.

FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name)

The proper terminology for a siteís domain name is the FQDN.

Freeware

Software made available for free downloading. Once you have downloaded freeware, you can do anything you want with it--the programmer retains no rights to it. (Also see Shareware.)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

This protocol permits you to connect to a remote computer, perform limited directory-related operations at that site, and to transfer files between that site and your desktop computer or local host. Anonymous FTP refers to the way you will log into most host computers. Most FTP sites permit you to log in as a guest, using the username "anonymous" with no password (other than your e-mail address) necessary.

FTP Client

A program on your desktop computer or local server that facilitates FTP downloading.
