Glossary - D
Data Compression
A compression program does to
a computer file what a trash compactor does to your trash--squishes it down into
its smallest possible incarnation. This data compression takes place for two reasons:
a compressed file takes less room to store; and it takes less time to download or
upload.
Decompression Program
A program used to decompress compressed
files. (Also see Compression Program.)
Demoware
Free demonstration software that
is available for downloading. Demoware usually consists of incomplete (or maimed)
software that is intended to demonstrate the usefulness of a program. The software
is purposely incomplete or maimed, so as not to permit full use of the free version.
For example, the print or save capabilities may not be available unless you pay for
the program.
DNS (Domain Name System)
A system that uniquely identifies
different organizations, computer systems, and individuals on the Internet.
Domain Name
The most basic part of an Internet
address. The domain name can include: the organizationís name; a three-letter abbreviation
indicating the organizational domain type; and/or a two-letter abbreviation indicating
the geographical location of the domain.
Download
To transfer information or programs
from a host computer to your computer.
