Glossary - C
Channel
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is organized
into channels. Each channel is an electronic chat area discussing a specific topic
(or organized for a specific use). There are hundreds of IRC channels available daily.
Channel Operator
A person who is in charge of an
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel. The channel operator gets to pick the discussion
topic, and kick people off the channel, among other privileges.
Chat Room
An America Online area set aside
for IRC (Internet Relay Chat). Each room discusses a particular topic, much like
an IRC channel. (Also see Channel.)
Client/Server
In a client/server arrangement,
the client would be software on your desktop computer or local server, and the server
would be a remote computer containing data you wish to peruse, or programs you wish
to use or download.
Communication Software
Software that enables your computer
and modem to communicate.
Compression Program
Software that does to a computer
file what a trash compactor does to your trash--squishes it down into its smallest
possible incarnation. This data compression takes place for two reasons: a compressed
file takes less room to store, and it takes less time to download or upload.
CompuServe
CompuServe is an online service
that, along with other member services, provides access to the Internet.
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
Often referred to as the brain
of your computer, the CPU is actually a chip located in your computerís main housing.
Most people use the term CPU to refer to the entire computer box (which also houses
your hard disk and disk drive among other things).
CWIS (Campus-Wide Information
System)
A gopher server containing information
about a particular campus.
