Glossary - A
32-Bit Number
With regard to the Internet, a
32-Bit Number refers to an IP (Internet Protocol) Address, which consists of a 32-bit
number. A 32-bit number can have 32 numbers, giving over 4 billion different combination
possibilities. An IP address is commonly represented as four groups of numbers joined
by period, for example: 123.45.678.9.
America Online
America Online is an online service
that, along with other member services, provides access to the Internet.
Anonymous FTP

Anti-Virus Program
A program that helps detect, and
sometimes eradicate computer viruses.
Archie
Archie is a program that maintains
a list of files stored at FTP sites worldwide. The list contains the filename, file
size, file type, and sometimes a brief description. This list is gathered and updated
on a regular basis.
Archie Client
A program on your desktop computer
or local server that facilitates archie searches.
Using an archie client is an alternative
to accessing archie through telnet.
Article
A message on a new topic within
a newsgroup.
ASCII (American Standard Code
for Information Interchange) File
A standardized coding system used
by almost all computers and printers. This standard makes it easy to exchange information
between different operating systems (such as Macintosh and PCs for example). Many
of the text files on the Internet are stored as ASCII files to ensure that any computer
can read them. (Also see Binary File.).
